| The First Thanksgiving Proclamation
On June 20, 1676, the governing council of
Charlestown, Massachusetts, held a meeting
to determine how best to express thanks for
the good fortune that had seen their community
securely established. By unanimous vote they
instructed Edward Rawson, the clerk, to proclaim
June 29 as a day of thanksgiving, our first.
After that first celebration, Thanksgiving was held on many different dates and days. In 1863, Abraham Lincoln proclaimed the last Thursday in November as "a day of thanksgiving and praise to our beneficient Father". Then, in 1939, President Franklin D. Roosevelt set the date one week earlier to lengthen the shopping period before Christmas. Finally, in 1941, the fourth Thursday of November was set by Congress as the federal holiday of Thanksgiving.
